A 1960's oil rig disaster leads two old friends, a good time waster and a bereaved lawyer, into the rough and tumble chaos of a 1970's Scottish oil boom. Meanwhile the sudden deaths of those responsible for the rig's collapse cast a suspicious and dangerous shadow over love and friendship alike. The twists and turns never fail to surprise as all those involved try to discover who and what they really are. Who will win? Who will lose? But most of all who is the most deadly amongst them?
Lady Charlotte Treharne is a British Supreme Court judge, one of only two women ever appointed to such an esteemed position.
Renowned as a maverick lawyer throughout her legal career, she is a friend of the Home Secretary and the Red Top press.
She is married to an ex-Special Forces officer, Joel Samson.
At the beginning of the novel she is subject to an assassination attempt, possibly by Islamist extremists, following her deportation order against an Islamic cleric, but there are others who seek her early demise.
Meanwhile her son Jolyan, goes off around the world on a 'gap year' before attending Oxford to study Greats. He befriends an Iranian student in Portugal, whose family fled the arrival of Khomeini back in the late 70's.
Lottie, as she is known to friends and family, is also a shareholder in the family business set up by her father, Treharne Holdings plc. A multi-national hotel chain that stretches across the globe. She and other family members own a majority stake (just!) in the company, which becomes the subject of a hostile takeover by some Manhattan venture capitalists.
Blackmail and general skulduggery are used to achieve their takeover aims.
Meanwhile the Iranian friend of Jolyan, turns out to be something more than he seems.
